Open Space Conference

On Friday November 20th Survivors' Network will be hosting a FREE Open Space conference. This will be a forum for survivors, health professionals, teachers, journalists, police, supporters and anyone with a desire to help in addressing sexual violence to come together  The Open Space format will put participants in the driving seat, letting them take control, collaborate and answer the question ‘How do we address sexual violence in the next 25 years?’

Sexual violence is, regrettably, a part of our society and groups like Survivors' Network are doing all they can to alleviate the damage it has on survivors within Sussex. However, after 25 years and with a focus on community and new ideas going forward, what we want to do now is tackle one of the most dangerous elements of sexual violence: silence.

Fabia Bates, Director of Survivors' Network, explains; “Abuse thrives on secrecy - the more that we talk about sexual violence the harder it becomes to keep it hidden. Knowing what to say or do can sometimes be hard but no-one ever asks to be raped or is responsible for the attack in any way and there is no right or wrong way to feel afterwards.

“If we open up the channels for discussion then we can help the healing journey to begin. One of the most important ways that you can support survivors of sexual violence and the work of Survivors' Network is to talk about it and be open to those around you to listen too.”

Our first event will be an open-plan conference for survivors, health professionals, teachers, journalists, supporters and anyone with a passion to be part of this change – to come together and help us address the issue. The Open Space format will put participants in the driving seat, letting them take control, collaborate and answer the question ‘How do we address sexual violence in the next 25 years?’

The day will focus on the future, with an emphasis on getting everyone to talk about and take responsibility for sexual violence.

A day for everyone who cares, working together to discuss

- How we can address Sexual Violence
- How we can best support survivors

The Survivors’ Network Open Space Conference is an opportunity for anyone who wants to help answer these questions to come together, share a conversation and think about how we can collaborate on solutions.

What is an Open Space Conference?

Do you find that lunch and coffee breaks are often the most creative part of your day? Do they give you the chance to talk to those with common interests, share information and develop ideas? An Open Space conference is shaped around the power of these conversations. We know that no-one has all the answers but that together we can make a difference.  You don’t have to be an expert to come along, you just need to be passionate about the theme. It’s up to you to decide what’s important, interesting and relevant and we’ll be on hand to guide and facilitate the day.

You don't have to be an expert, you just need to be passionate about the topic, interested in meeting others, and willing to share your thoughts and creativity. Everyone is welcome, if this sounds interesting, you're exactly who should be there!
