Reclaim the Night Brighton: Annual March to Protest Gender-Based Violence and Demand Safer Streets
Brighton, UK – November 2024 – The streets of Brighton will once again be filled with powerful chants, banners, and unity as the annual Reclaim The Night Brighton march returns this November. Organised by a coalition of Brighton feminists, survivors, and activists, the event invites all members of the community to stand together against gender-based violence, harassment, and discrimination, demanding safer spaces for women and all marginalised genders.
– Date: Friday, November 29th, 2024
– Time: 6:00 PM
– Starting Location: Outside Brighton Central Station, Queens Road
– Ending Location: Pavillion Gardens, Brighton
In response to a barrage of disturbing incidents of sexual violence, street harassment and femicide in the UK and abroad Reclaim The Night highlights the urgency of ending violence against women and marginalised genders.
Reclaim The Night Brighton is a rallying cry for the community to stand united in support of survivors and to address the persistent issue of gender-based violence in both public and private spaces.
Why Reclaim The Night Matters in 2024
Gender-based violence continues to be a serious and pervasive issue across the UK. According to recent reports, over 80% of women in the UK have experienced harassment in public spaces. Brighton, though celebrated for its progressive values, is not immune to these issues, with local organisations reporting a concerning rise in cases of harassment and assault. The march will serve as both a protest and a platform for survivors, activists, and allies to raise awareness, challenge societal norms, and demand meaningful change.
Organisers of Reclaim The Night Brighton emphasise that this event is about reclaiming public spaces and promoting a culture of respect, equality, and accountability. “We are here to say that we deserve to feel safe and respected, wherever we are and whatever we’re doing,” said Lucy May, spokesperson for Reclaim The Night Brighton. “We’re tired of living in a world where we have to be constantly vigilant. We have had enough, it’s time for change, and together, we are powerful enough to demand it.”
What to Expect: A Night of Unity, Strength, and Solidarity
The march will begin outside Brighton Station on the Queens Roadside at 6:00 PM. Participants will walk through central Brighton, proceeding down West Street, along the seafront, and up Old Steine. The march will conclude at Pavilion Gardens, where there will be a series of speeches from community members and organisations, survivor testimonies and a candlelight vigil to honour the resilience of survivors and remember those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence. Attendees are encouraged to bring banners, signs, and flowers as a symbol of solidarity and hope in the face of darkness.
Support from Local Organisations and Leaders
This year’s Reclaim The Night Brighton continues to raise money and awareness for the city’s sexual violence support service Survivors’ Network. Several prominent leaders and activists are expected to attend, showing their solidarity with the movement and calling for systemic reforms to address harassment, violence, and discrimination.
Key Issues Addressed by Reclaim The Night 2024
1. Safer Public Spaces: The event highlights the need for communities, local governments, and law enforcement to ensure safer streets for women and marginalised people.
2. Survivor Support and Resources: Calls for more resources, mental health support, and funding for organisations that work with survivors of sexual violence.
3. Intersectionality and Inclusion: The march emphasises that the fight against gender-based violence must include all identities—acknowledging the unique experiences of women of colour, LGBTQ+ individuals including the trans and non-binary community, disabled people, and other marginalised groups.
4. Education and Promoting Respect: Demands Local Authorities, Schools and Government to take note of the increase in incel culture and misogynistic rhetoric online that young people are exposed to and work to promote healthy relationships, emotional intelligence and respect in schools.
5. Empowering the Next Generation: Reclaim The Night Brighton 2024 encourages young people to be part of the movement, promoting education and awareness to dismantle harmful norms and build a future where everyone is free from fear.
A Message of Hope and Change
The message of Reclaim The Night Brighton is clear: change is possible, and everyone has a role to play in creating a world free from gender-based violence. By taking to the streets, the community is making a statement that echoes beyond Brighton, joining a global movement for safety, justice, and equality for everyone.
