ISVA Blog: What to Expect at Our Reporting Options Drop-In

What it is, who can attend and how.

At Survivors’ Network, we know that deciding whether to report a sexual offence to the police can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we’ve launched a Reporting Options Drop-In in partnership with Sussex Police—a confidential space where survivors can get clear, unbiased information about the reporting process.

This drop-in is open to anyone who has experienced sexual violence, whether recently or in the past. There’s no pressure to report—the session is simply an opportunity to learn about your options so that you can make the choice that feels right for you.

Who Will I Speak To?

You can choose to speak with:

  • An ISVA (Independent Sexual Violence Advisor) from Survivors’ Network, who can explain the process and offer emotional and practical support.
  • A VCC (Victim Contact Coordinator) from Sussex Police, who can answer questions about making a report and what happens in an investigation.
  • Both—it’s completely up to you.

All conversations are confidential, and no identifying information will be recorded unless a safeguarding concern is raised.

What Happens at the Drop-In?

When you arrive at the Brighthelm Centre, let reception know you’re here for the drop-in. You’ll then be welcomed by an ISVA, who will ask whether you’d like to speak with an ISVA, a VCC, or both.

The session takes place in a private space and lasts around 20 minutes. You can use this time however feels most useful—whether that’s asking specific questions or getting a general overview of the reporting process. You won’t be asked to share details of your experience, and there’s no expectation that you will go on to make a report.

What Can I Ask?

There are no silly questions. Some survivors ask:

  • What does a police investigation involve?
  • What kind of evidence is considered?
  • Can I report anonymously?
  • What support is available if I do report?

Our ISVAs and VCCs won’t tell you what to do—they’re simply here to provide honest, factual information so you can make an informed choice.

Anonymity and Confidentiality

This is a completely anonymous space. We won’t ask for your name or any identifying details, and nothing you share will be recorded. The only exception is if a safeguarding concern is raised—this will be clearly explained at the start of the session.

At the end, we may ask if you’d like to provide anonymous feedback to help us improve the service, but this is entirely optional.

What If I Decide to Report?

If you decide you’d like to make a report, we can explain the next steps and how to do this. However, full reports won’t be taken at the drop-in—this is purely a space to explore your options.

How to Attend

The Reporting Options Drop-In runs every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, from 1:15 pm – 2:45 pm, at the Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton.

No appointment is needed—just drop in. You’re welcome to bring a supporter with you. If you can’t attend in person, we can arrange a phone call instead.
