Black History Month 2024

We consider this year's theme of "Reclaiming Narratives" and list ways of celebrating Black History Month in Sussex

This year’s Black History Month embraces the theme of “Reclaiming Our Narratives.” It’s a powerful reminder that stories shape our understanding of history, culture, and identity. For too long, Black voices have been excluded or marginalized in mainstream narratives. This month is an opportunity to celebrate the richness of Black history, amplify the voices of those who have been silenced, and honour the contributions of Black communities—both nationally and right here in Sussex.

“Reclaiming Our Narratives” is about more than just telling stories. It’s about reclaiming the power to define history, correct misrepresentations, and highlight the resilience and achievements of Black people. In Sussex, this means acknowledging both the challenges faced by the Black community and celebrating the profound contributions they’ve made to our region.

Sussex, like many other parts of the UK, has a rich but complex history with Black communities that is often overlooked. By celebrating Black History Month locally, we have an opportunity to bring hidden histories to the forefront. We can shine a light on the experiences of Black people in Sussex—from early settlers to today’s activists and community leaders. It’s about recognizing those who have contributed to the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the region, despite systemic barriers.

For us at Survivors’ Network, the theme of “Reclaiming Our Narratives” resonates deeply with our mission to support all survivors of sexual violence, taking into account the intersectionality of those from marginalized backgrounds. Black survivors often face unique challenges due to systemic racism and historical silencing, which can make it even more difficult to seek help and find justice. This month, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring that Black survivors’ voices are heard and their stories valued.

Celebrating Black History Month in Sussex is a step towards creating a more inclusive and understanding community. By honouring the theme of “Reclaiming Our Narratives,” we commit to amplifying Black voices, acknowledging past and present contributions, and continuing the fight against inequality and injustice in all its forms. Together, let’s celebrate, listen, and learn from the narratives that have too often been neglected.
